I have a prostate infection I can’t seem to get rid of?

[display_name id=”0″]Yes…and the reason is because the prostate has a membrane around it. This is a good thing because when it gets infected it keeps the male from getting potentially VERY sick. It’s a bad thing because there are very few antibiotics that can cross that membrane to treat the infection. This usually requires a longer course of antibiotics than most infections (from 30 days to three months). Also, if you have recurrent prostatitis (perhaps you feel better when on medication but the moment you go off it, or are off it for only a short time, the symptoms return) there can be some damage to the nerves in the area which require a medication to soothe the nerves (amitriptyline). Both of these usually work well. You can also try using a zinc supplement as our patients seem to have good luck with this lessening the episodes of recurrence. Unfortunately, once you have prostatitis, you most likely will get it again. You can also take ibuprofen for the discomfort and for the anti-inflammatory properties – up to 800 mg three times a day with food for ten days or as needed. Also, regular ejaculations are a good idea in this case.
